Watercolor 01 by Atlas0 Watercolor 01 by Atlas0
Bought new Watercolors (Windsor and Newton; a small travel kit with 12 colors) -- I've talked to some of you guys about taking the colors up -- and decided to draw/color an animal.

I don't know what I did here.

If anyone has any experience with Watercolors and has tips about anything relating to it, feel free to share. This is probably a battle I can't win alone :aww: =)

Hmmmm, nice usage of the color and expressive strokes. However the paper doesn't seem to be the best one for this medium.
Can you give me the grammage and the kind of grain of this paper?

Appreciate the compliments =)

I've heard Watercolor paper is what I should be using... i'm not to keen on the grammage and grain of the paper exactly, but this is what I used for this picture: [link]

Ooh, comic sketchbook. Nice for inks but bad for watercolor

The cheapest watercolor papers that you can find are Canson (regular or Montvall) and Fabriano. All these ones are cold pressed so they have mid grain which is ideal for the beginners (the fine grain allows more stylized and draw-like strokes, but it dries faster and the rough grain has the inverse problems, being ideal for works with a big format)
I recommend you work with a grammage of 300 g/mē or more. In that way the paper is the enough thick to stands a lot of moisture before buckle. In that way don't need to prestretch the paper before paint on it

Great work! you got the colors placed right. In fact, if you dare you can keep adding details to it with a smaller brush

Well, I'm not sure about getting the colors right -- I think I might've used too many, but glad you like it =)

I would buy water color paper. It really helps since it doesn't warp when you use a lot of water.
I don't really know what you are going for.
A clean, photorealistic style like Alex Ross or something like this : [link]

Thanks, I'll definitely look into that; unless there's a particular brand you recommend?

I don't know what I was going for this time either; I was just trying it out I guess -- a first time kind of thing. It was a pretty interesting experience overall, how the paint dries, how to mix the colors, etc. Very educational.

Ultimately I would like to end up looking like :icondaviddeb: but a little different. My problem is I have no idea where to start :aww: (:iconauroraink:'s stylized look would be interesting to achieve too).

No, I can't recommend a brand. I just used whatever I found in different art supply stores.
All I can recommend is to watch tutorials to learn the basics and to practice.
Not really helpful I guess...:D
